Did you know that in Toronto’s 2010 municipal election only 50% of eligible electors voted? It was actually 20% more than the previous election. With the 2014 election just around the corner and all the attention it’s been getting, I bet the numbers will be much higher this time around. For those Torontonians that need an extra push to the voting booth, some Toronto establishments are offering a few tasty incentives to get out and vote early this October 15th to 17th.
You know how the early bird catches the worm?…well, worms are gross, but ice cream and lobster are delicious! Sweet Olenka’s Ice Cream Shop is offering free ice cream and truffles for the early voters tomorrow. All you have to do is take a selfie at the voting booth and present the photo at the store.
But if you think your early vote deserves something more substantial in terms of the reward and nourishment, head over to Rock Lobster, Dog & Bear or Cadillac Lounge and enjoy discounted food and beer. All you have to do is say “I voted” when ordering and you’ll receive a discount, and if you want to find out more, a group of civic-conscious Torontonians have organized the Happy Voting Hour.
The eateries are staying neutral through out the election. There will not be promotional material for any candidate at the venues. This is purely to celebrate the all too often underrated act of fulfilling your civic duty.
Toronto’s race for mayor officially gets going October 27th, so if you can’t make it out to the voting booth early, make sure your vote counts then.
