Movies Al Fresco: Free Outdoor Movies in Toronto

tiff-in-the-parkI watch a movie almost every weekend. Whether it’s in the theatre or at home, I love getting lost in a story. But with summer being as short as it is, I also want to take advantage of the outdoors, the warm weather and all that Toronto has to offer in the summer as much as possible. Last year the Harbourfront Centre solved my dilemma with their free weekly screenings at the WestJet Stage. It was one of my favourite things to do last summer. Given that Harbourfront Centre is just a short walk from my house, the location was perfect. I settled in with my warm hoody and take-out Thai food from a nearby restaurant to watch Moneyball under the stars.

This year, Harbourfront Centre has done it again, but that’s not the only outdoor venue offering free flicks under the stars. There are many locations around the city like Yonge-Dundas Square, David Pecaut Square (across from TIFF Bell Lightbox) and more. Whether you’re into action, comedy, drama, it’s all there. Here is my list of free film screenings offered all over our great city.

Location: Sugar Beach, 25 Dockside Drive

For three summer nights in August, Canada’s Sugar Beach is transformed into an outdoor theatre. Movies are shown under the open skies on a two-sided screen set atop a barge in Toronto Harbour. Watch movies for free from the water, or pull up a sandcastle and watch from the beach. Great fun.

    • Had a look at your page. Great to know, thanks! There’s been a lot of interest in outdoor movie nights in quite a few Toronto neighbourhoods. CityPlace is currently looking into it. Good to know services like yours make it easy. Cheers!
