The long weekend is upon us with an extra day to relax and soak up the sun, or to take in a fun cultural event in the city. If you’re not driving up to the cottage and instead looking to keep yourself busy in the city, as always, I have plans for you. Here is my TOP5 things to do in Toronto this weekend.
Victoria Day Fireworks – This year’s Victoria Day Fireworks display at Ashbridges Bay promises an explosively fun wrap-up to the holiday weekend, punctuated by plenty of “ooohs” and “ahhhs” from the crowd. Starting at 10:00pm, featuring over 2,000 fireworks and closing with a grand finale of pyrotechnic wonders, the annual lakeside event is a Toronto favourite. But drivers beware, massive crowds make traffic and parking a nightmare. Guests are encouraged to take public transit. The TTC runs increased streetcar service along Queen East for the event.
Victoria Day With Lady A – If you feel like celebrating this Monday with a little music, 98.1 CHFI presents a free exclusive concert at Yonge Dundas Square. Lady Antebellum take stage at 4:00pm and will be playing hits from their new album Golden. Get there early!
MEC BikeFest – Mountain Equipment Co-op joins together with Bixi, Clif Bar, Bullfrog and YNOT Cycle to celebrate cyclists and bikes this weekend in Trinity Bellwoods Park. Supporting the cycling community and recognizing their role on Toronto’s roads, there will be bike seminars and clinics staged throughout the day on Saturday along with demos and activities planned for kids. All events are free and start at 11:00am.
Toronto International Circus Festival – A great way to keep your kids happy over the long weekend is with some old-fashioned circus entertainment at Harbourfront Centre. HarbourKIDS is putting on this free, three-day showcase of acrobats, daredevils, buskers and more, aimed at children under 12. Features at the Circus Festival include clowning with Morro & Jasp in the Studio Theatre’s Go Bake Yourself, Vague de Cirque on the WestJet Stage, a shadow-puppet workshop in the Brigantine Room, magic with Magic Boulevard in Zone 6, KinderCirque at Lakeside Terrace, and other shows to stimulate your children’s imaginations.
Artfest Toronto – The 6th Annual Artfest Toronto takes place this long weekend at the Distillery District over the course of three days. Artists and artisans from across Ontario and Quebec showcase their works at this juried arts festival that takes place outdoors. Paintings, pottery, photography, gourmet food and jewelry will be on display and for sale until Victoria Day. If you needed a reason to get out in the beautiful weather, now you have one.
