It has been somewhat of a dreary week with the sad events south of the boarder and the unpredictable weather here at home. But all the sadness made me appreciate Toronto and all the great things this city has to offer. If you haven’t made plans for the weekend just yet, there are some great events that will put a smile on your face. Food, music, and maybe a bit of community involvement is in store this weekend. Here are my TOP5 things to do in Toronto this weekend.
Earth Day at Evergreen Brick Works – Earth Day 2013 officially takes place Monday, April 22, but various locations in Toronto will be celebrating this weekend. Evergreen Brick Works is hosting an Earth Mudder Weekend complete with a public tree-planting event, a crafts activity using mud and clay, a guided nature tour, strawberry planting and even a bike tune-up session. Join in for a full weekend of family-friendly fun to celebrate the Earth and all her glory.
Toronto Bridal Show – The Direct Energy Centre will be packed this weekend with more than 275 vendors for the city’s biggest and best spring bridal event. Highlights include runway fashion shows and an appearance by Canada’s (former) bachelor Brad Smith with fiancée Bianka Kamber.
Celebrate Record Store Day – Yes! Records have their special day too. Record Store Day began in 2007 and has grown into a North America-wide party, held on the third Saturday of April (in other words, this Saturday). To celebrate, musicians big and small release exclusive records or play surprise shows. Toronto, with its wealth of indie shops, has 21 stores officially participating, from Frantic City Records in the Junction to Greek World Music on the Danforth. Here’s a quick rundown of some the best places to go celebrate.
Fidel Gastro’s Lisa Marie – The chef behind Fidel Gastro’s, one of Toronto’s most popular food trucks, has found a permanent home on Queen West. Foodies and gluttons alike can rejoice now that Matt Basile’s first restaurant Lisa Marie is set to open this Friday night. With a menu that reads like the dream list of a true gastronome, dine on massive turkey wings, mozzarella and marrow deep fried sandwiches, pork belly sitting pretty on some melted cheese, and so much more. And be sure to test out some of their surefire crazy tasty cocktails.
Eat Up and Clean Up with Drake – If you live in the Queen West neighbourhood you know what a fun and vibrant community it is. To celebrate their friends and neighbours, The Drake has organized a pancake breakfast and Beaconsfield Village clean up. If you want to meet some of your neighbours and help the community why not bring your family and join in this Saturday at 8:00am in the Underground for a complete breakfast and story time for the little ones. After your eats, grab a garbage bag and seedbombs and head out into the ‘hood for a clean up. Bring your appetite for stacked community fun. Space is limited so be sure to email RSVP@THEDRAKEHOTEL.CA.
