City Living: Furniture for Small Spaces

modernfurnitureOne of the exciting things about moving into a new house or a condo is decorating your new space and shopping for furniture. But let’s face it, if you’re looking for something a bit more sophisticated than IKEA, furniture can be expensive. I’m often asked on my take on the furniture stores in Toronto and where to get the good stuff. Although I wouldn’t claim to be the expert on the subject (I leave that to my Interior Designer friends) I do spend most of my days touring homes and condos with my clients so the topic comes up a lot, naturally. Here are a few of my favourites:

Eq3-liberty-villageEQ3 is the perfect store for condo dwellers offering a wide selection of modern furniture and accessories to furnish every room. The showroom is well layed out and the staff is very helpful. (Liberty Village)

CB2 is Crate & Barrel’s more modern younger sister. It carries fun modern pieces that are simple enough to mix in with your existing furniture and furnish every room in your modern apartment, loft or home without denting your wallet. (Queen West)

Casalife Furniture carries furniture made for loft living or larger condos with clean lines and sleek designs. Slightly above average prices but it offers options for customization. Also carries mirrors and lighting. (Liberty Village)

Structube Those who prefer the compact and functional Ikea-type look but maybe a more up-scale, more grown-up version, this is a place for you. Here you can find great quality, affordable pieces. (Several locations)

WestElmWestElm offers contemporary furniture with reasonable prices and good inventory so you don’t have to wait months for your new couch. Also carries plenty of fun accessories – anything from bedding to glassware. (Liberty Village)

Urban Barn is a Canadian-owned company offering contemporary furniture, accessories and  home decor solutions. The furniture is very affordable with a good mix of modern and contemporary. (Queen West & Etobicoke)

Style Garage The emphasis here is on clean and modern pieces. Lots of cool greys and dark colours, hot-rolled steel and natural wood. This is a great place for unique pieces and custom-made furniture if you have a generous budget. (Queen West)

DesignRepublicDesign Republic offers unusual furniture and home furnishings, from the edgiest modern sofas to design classics to industrial and vintage pieces. If you can’t find what you’re looking for anywhere else, you’ll probably find it here. (Queen West)

Design Within Reach carries modern classics from Kartell, Herman Miller and Knoll and if you appreciate the work of designers such as Mies Van Der Rohe or Emes, this is the place. But you won’t find knock-offs here, so be prepared to pay above average prices. If you’re looking for that one great piece to showcase in your home (in my case there are a few on my wishlist) you can be sure that you are getting quality work. (King West)

Inspiration – Starting with a clean slate can be a daunting task sometimes and if you’ve flipped through all your House and Home magazines go online and try Houzz. With hundreds of thousands of design photos and ideas, you can create your very own idea book and find out where to purchase what you like. And of course there’s always Pinterest where you can collect images and “pin” them on your boards for inspiration – very addictive. Have fun!!!

  2. Modern Sensibility should be on the list too! They offer great small space furniture: expanding tables, slipcovers for sofa beds and clever storage options. Their sale prices are unbeatable. I got a sofa with storage and an ottoman for $349.

  3. That is a very interesting post! Most of the shops that are listed on this post are nice, especially EQ3, but mostly of them are a little bit over priced. I recently was looking to get me a brand new sofa and found a cool website called Roderick Allan. It’s simply amazing and has no extra fees or charges and has free shipping on it! I recommend this site to anyone who wants modern affordable condo living furniture! XOXO! 😀

  4. It’s definitely difficult trying to make furniture work in small spaces! Try out, they work with your space and make sure all your furniture is well-suited for the layout. They even set everything up for you within a day!
